Suri Alpacas Suris are very striking looking alpacas at all times but especially when they are in full coat. They wear a coat of fine silk like fiber that hangs in softly waved ringlets from their backs. An alpaca is a beauty to behold, but a suri running in full coat is a wonder as the coat flows away from his body like a silken robe. They literally glow and glisten in the sun.
Suris represent
less than 6% of all alpacas worldwide making them and their fiber relatively rare. The majority of suris are white, though there is an increasing number
of colored suris being bred in the United States. We are privileged
to own a mahogany (red-brown) herdsire , a medium brown (cinnamon) female
as well as several light fawn to honey gold females along with our white
suris, some of whom carry colored genes. Like the huacaya it takes
to the dye bath with beautiful results. The fiber is fine and soft like cashmere with the sheen and smoothness of silk. It is a heavy fiber, and is best when finely spun for elegant sweaters, shawls and scarves.
The Fuchsia Fleece's suri fiber is combed into sliver to produce a fine silk like yarn. It too can be blended with other fibers.
